In West India, in the world’s largest delta, 54 small, forested islands make up the Sundarbans. It’s a perilous place buffeted by monsoons, soaked by extreme tides, and haunted by some of the most fearsome predators on the planet. The human inhabitants of the region seem to have struck a standing truce with these beasts. Bengal tigers habitually attack—and kill—30-50 people every year, and that’s just the reported number. They stalk men as they gather honey in the mangrove forest, spring upon fishermen as they ride the muddy swells of the rivers. Now, a tiger has chosen a new target—this time inside the village on Shamshernagar Island itself. What could have lured the striped cat into human territory? As the investigators probe the attack on young Rupali Baulia, they are forced to confront even bigger issues. Bengal tigers are protected in India, but should this protection be reconsidered? |
